Help Center › Business Card Scan

The business card scan feature lets you point your phone camera at a paper business card and have NFC Tagify read the contact details automatically. The extracted information is saved as a lead in your portal, so you can follow up with new contacts without manually typing anything. This article explains how to use the feature and what to expect.

What does the business card scan feature do?

When you meet someone who has a traditional paper business card, this feature lets you:

  • Point your phone camera at the card.
  • NFC Tagify uses OCR (optical character recognition) to read and extract the contact information printed on it.
  • You review the extracted details and correct any errors.
  • Save the contact as a lead in your NFC Tagify portal.
  • The lead is then accessible from your portal account on any device, so you have a record of everyone you have met — regardless of whether they use NFC Tagify themselves.

How to access the scan feature

The business card scan is available in the NFC Tagify mobile portal. To access it:

  • Open the NFC Tagify portal on your mobile device (via browser or the app if available).
  • Log in to your account.
  • Tap the Scan tab or the Scan card button in the navigation.
  • Grant camera permission if prompted — this is required for the scan to work.

Scanning a card step by step

  • Position the card — Place the paper business card on a flat, well-lit surface. Avoid shadows and glare. Ensure all the text on the card is visible and not folded or obscured.
  • Frame the card — Hold your phone so the card fills most of the camera view. Align the card within the on-screen guide frame if one appears.
  • Capture — Either the app will scan automatically when the card is in focus, or you will need to tap a Capture or shutter button.
  • Review the extracted details — A form appears with the data that was recognised. Fields typically include: name, job title, company name, email address, phone number, and website. Check each field and correct any misreadings.
  • Save as lead — Tap Save (or Save as lead) to store the contact. The lead is immediately visible in your portal under Leads.

    What data is extracted?

The OCR engine attempts to read and categorise all printed text on the card. Fields it looks for include:

    • Full name (or first and last name separately)
    • Job title
    • Company name
    • Email address
    • Phone number(s) — including mobile and office numbers if both are present
    • Website URL
    • Physical address (if printed)
    • Social media handles (if clearly labelled)

Not all fields will always be detected, particularly if the card uses an unusual layout, a decorative font, or very light text on a pale background. Always review the extracted data before saving.

    Limitations

    • Print quality — Worn, folded, or low-contrast cards may not scan well. For best results, scan clean, flat cards.
    • Decorative fonts — Highly stylised or script fonts can confuse the OCR engine. You may need to correct more fields manually.
    • Non-Latin characters — Cards with names or text in non-Latin scripts (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese) may not be recognised accurately. [NEEDS VERIFICATION: current OCR language support]
    • Double-sided cards — The scan captures one side at a time. If the back of the card has additional contact details, scan it separately or add the extra fields manually.
    • Handwritten notes — Any handwriting on the card will not be reliably extracted.

    Viewing and managing your leads

Saved leads are accessible in the portal under the Leads section. From there you can:

    • View the contact details.
    • Add personal notes about where you met.
    • Export your leads to a CSV file.
    • [NEEDS VERIFICATION: whether leads can be pushed to a CRM or email tool directly]

    Frequently asked questions

Is the scanned card image stored anywhere?

The image is used temporarily for OCR processing and is not stored as a permanent image in your account. Only the extracted text fields are saved as the lead record.

Can I scan a digital business card (e.g. a screenshot) instead of a physical card?

The feature is designed for physical cards, but a clear screenshot displayed on a screen may work. Results will vary depending on screen glare and font rendering. For your own contacts' NFC Tagify profiles, the better approach is to tap their NFC card or scan their QR code directly.

The scan missed a phone number that is clearly printed on the card. Can I add it manually?

Yes. After the scan, you are shown a review screen with all the extracted fields. You can add, edit, or delete any field before saving. Fields that were not detected can be typed in manually.

Do I need an internet connection to scan?

Yes. OCR processing requires a connection to NFC Tagify's servers. Scanning will not work offline.
