NFC and Privacy: What’s Shared, What’s Not

When someone taps an NFC card, a natural question is: what’s actually being shared? And what isn’t? In a time where data privacy matters more than ever, it’s important to understand how NFC cards work — and how they keep things simple, safe, and under your control.

How NFC Works in Simple Terms

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It allows a smartphone to read small bits of data from a card or tag — usually just a link (a URL). When you tap an NFC card, the phone opens the link you’ve programmed into it. That could be your profile, website, social page, or anything else you choose.

What’s important is: that’s all it does. The tap doesn’t store or track anything. It doesn’t collect personal information or follow anyone around. It simply opens a destination you’ve chosen.

What’s Shared (and Not Shared)

To make this clearer, here’s a table explaining exactly what’s shared when someone taps your card, and what’s not.

You Stay in Control

With NFC cards, the owner (you) decides exactly what the card does. You can change your link anytime. You can share a profile, contact page, social links, or payment option — all without needing a reprint. That means your card stays private, flexible, and secure.

Your Customer Stays in Control Too

The person who taps your card also stays in control. They choose what to view, what to click, and whether or not to save your info. Nothing is automatic. Nothing is hidden. And no data is collected from them without their action.
